Instead, consider implementing a “Try It” approach, where you introduce new routines or coping techniques gradually and without pressure. For example, if your child struggles with transitions, try a visual schedule that they can engage with at their own pace. Encourage open dialogue, asking them what feels comfortable or what might help them in different situations. This collaborative approach not only builds trust but also empowers your child to express their needs and preferences.

For me, understanding neurodiversity meant seeing my kids’ differences not as challenges to overcome, but as things to celebrate. It helped me shift from frustration to pride in their individuality. Once I started learning about neurodiversity, I realized that my own experiences—struggling with focus, feeling overwhelmed by sensory input—were part of that same spectrum. I was diagnosed with ADHD in my 20s and only recently began connecting the dots about my autism. It’s been a journey of self-awareness, and working with my doctor on managing my ADHD has helped me better understand my needs.
